INGRES OPEN SOURCE DATABASE POWERS SEARCH FOR MISSING CHILDREN
Ingres Technology Supports Critical Mission of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children
REDWOOD CITY, CA & ALEXANDRIA, VA. - June 3, 2008 - Ingres Corporation, a leading provider of open source database management software and support services, today announced that the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) is using the Ingres open source database to help law enforcement solve crimes against children. In operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, NCMEC relies on Ingres to store and distribute vital information on missing and exploited children.
NCMEC started with Ingres 10 years ago with a single Ingres database, and has grown today to include multiple Ingres open source databases that run both internal and external systems for the organization. Ingres technology supports NCMEC's entire website, internal operations, missing child case management system, and the storing and distribution of leads on missing and exploited children. NCMEC has also been a long-standing customer of Ingres Premium Services, which maximize performance, availability, and capabilities of Ingres products and Ingres-based solutions.
"In the work that NCMEC does, it is essential that we are able to act quickly and that law enforcement can rely on us to provide necessary information in cases of missing or exploited children," said Peg Flick, CIO of NCMEC. "Ingres support and reliability are vital to our success and we are grateful for their contributions to our efforts. NCMEC has a recovery rate of 96% for missing children, and that is in large part due to the support of technology partners like Ingres who embrace our mission of child safety."
Today, NCMEC's organization consists of several user communities. A secure intranet offers access to over 300 employees, as well as Federal agencies and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces (ICACs). It also provides public access to missingkids.com, NCMEC's main website, and CyberTipline.com, an online reporting resource for cases of child sexual exploitation operated by NCMEC.
NCMEC's website receives 125,842 visits per day and provides uninterrupted delivery of the organization's important information. To ensure this, Ingres provides the ability to quickly identify and resolve problems when they happen. There are approximately 3,785 missing child cases and a total of 728 running web pages through the system managed by Ingres.
"Ingres is proud of its work with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and provides the organization with the technology they need to assist in its admirable efforts to find missing children," said Deb Woods, vice president of product management at Ingres. "From lowering total-cost-of-ownership to rapid implementations at an affordable cost, more and more organizations today are truly understanding the power of running mission critical workloads off of an open source database."
Ingres databases are built on an open source model, freeing customers from costly and cumbersome proprietary databases solutions. The Ingres commercially supported, open-source relational database management system reduces IT costs and a company's time-to-value while providing outstanding performance and customer support.
